PURPOSE

The purpose of this Standard Sign Book is to provide the latest accepted standard signs for use on Maryland highways in a format which is user friendly to the fabricator, technician and engineer. A team of fabricators, traffic technicians and traffic engineers put this book together in an atmosphere which fosters quality and improved efficiency. User friendliness for the traffic technician/engineer includes the addition of a cross reference to the Maryland Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MdMUTCD).

SIGN NUMBERS

The Federal Number System was used to number all Maryland specific signs while still allowing for addition of new Federal signs and numbers. Some sign numbers have been changed from the old Standard Sign Book. All Maryland specific signs which relate to a Federal Sign Standard are numbered using the Federal number, followed by a numeral in parenthesis (EX. D11-1(1) for a Maryland specific sign related to the D11-1 Federal sign)

REFLECTIVE SHEETING

Sign sheeting shall conform to section 950.03 of the latest Edition of the Standard Specifications for Construction and Materials; the contract documents; or as directed by the Engineer.
