Description:
Upgrade existing MD 4 to a multilane freeway from MD 223 to I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) (3.1 miles). Bicycles and pedestrians will be accommodated where appropriate. (BRAC Related)
 
Scope:
Project Study Area



MD 4 connects southern Anne Arundel County and Calvert county with employment areas in Prince George’s County and the District of Columbia, (Washington, D.C.). It connects three major routes in Prince George’s county: US 301, MD 223, and I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) and is the primary regional roadway in eastern Prince George’s County, providing access to Andrews Air Force Base.

The purpose of the project is to improve safety and provide sufficient capacity to address existing and projected travel demands throughout the corridor.

 
What Is Under Study:
Details on transportation studies, environmental studies and alternatives considered during the planning process may be viewed in the May 2000: Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) / Section 4(f) Evaluation - Maryland Route 4: From east of the I-95/I-495 Interchange to West of MD Route 223. The Selected Alternative described in the FONSI includes grade-separated interchanges where MD 4 intersects with Suitland Park, Westphalia Road and Dower House Road, as well as improvement to MD 4 in the project area. The planning study was completed in 2000.
