US 301 provides a vital connection to the regional transportation network, connecting areas north and west of Bowie. MD 197 serves the cities of Bowie, Laurel and Greenbelt Maryland. The US 301 / MD 197 Transportation Study is the first “break-out” project of the US 301 Transportation Corridor Project Study, completed in 1996. That study included recommendations developed by a 75-person task force to address the growing traffic congestion issues along the US 301 corridor.

The purpose of the project is to:

  • Address congestion;
  • Increase mobility;
  • Improve safety conditions;
  • Examine access to existing and future developments; and,
  • Investigate the need and feasibility of enhancing vehicular access to developments.
Additional details may be viewed in the Purpose and Needs Statement .

What Is Under Study:
The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), secured Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Location Approval of MDOT SHA Preferred Alternative, Alternative 2 with Roundabouts, on June 24 2008. Details on the planning process are summarized in the Location / Approval - Categorical Exemption Concurrence memo.

Description of Selected Alternative

US 301: Between Mt. Oak Road and US 50, US 301 would be widened to three through lanes in each direction. Existing at-grade intersections and traffic signals at US 301 / Heritage Boulevard, US 301 Harbour Way, and US 301 / Mill Branch Road / Excalibur Road would be eliminated.

Proposed US 301 Typical Section

The remaining 2-lane sections of US 301 would be widened to 3 lanes in each direction.

MD 97:The existing at-grade intersection would be eliminated. A new a grade-separated interchange would be constructed with MD 97 elevated over US 301. Two roundabouts would be constructed at the ends of the interchange ramp and connect to new one-way roadways (“collector-distributors” (CD)), located parallel to US 301, to provide access to adjacent properties. The intersection of MD 197 and Mitchellville Road would be improved with additional through lanes and turn lanes.

Relocated Harbour Way to Governor Bridge Road: An overpass would be constructed to connect the Relocated Harbour Way to Governor Bridge Road. Governor Bridge Road would be extended southward to function as a service road.

Excalibur Road to Mill Branch Road : An overpass would connect Excalibur Road to Mill Branch Road. Additional details may be viewed in the Spring 2007 Newsletter.

The project will proceed in phases as project funds become available. Click to view the map of proposed construction phases.
