County:Howard Project Number:BA467_51
US 0040 BALTIMORE NATIONAL PIKE TC-11 - BRIDGE 3109 OVER PATAPSCO RIVER
Project Name:
US 40, Baltimore National Pike

Location of Project:
TC-11 - BRIDGE 3109 OVER PATAPSCO RIVER

Description:
Replace Bridge 0310900 over Patapsco River. Shoulders will accommodate bicycles and pedestrians.

Scope:
SHA and its contractor, Corman Construction, are rehabilitating the US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) Bridge over the Patapsco River. This project is a part of SHA's statewide bridge system preservation program.

The historic US 40 bridge, originally constructed in 1936, is structurally safe, but the concrete bridge deck (riding surface) and other parts of the bridge have been removed and will be replaced. The rest of the structure is in good condition.

The project includes removal and replacement of the deteriorated concrete deck and floor beams, replacement of all of the columns, and repairs to the remaining concrete portions of the original bridge.

The bridge rehabilitation work will extend the service life of the bridge an additional 30 to 50 years.

The bridge will remain open to traffic during construction. There will be at least one lane open on eastbound and westbound US 40 at all times during construction.

The contractor constructed two 2-lane temporary bridges over the Patapsco River, one to carry eastbound traffic and the other to carry westbound traffic. In late December 2011, SHA and the contractor shifted all traffic from the historic bridge onto the two temporary bridges.

The historic bridge was closed for rehabilitation work until December 19, 2012 when SHA re-opened both lanes of eastbound US 40 on the historic bridge.

SHA re-opened one lane of westbound US 40 in January 2013; the other lane will be closed until mid-summer 2013 so crews may safely remove the temporary bridges and abutments used during construction work.

The Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area will remain open during bridge construction work, and the park entrances along eastbound and westbound US 40 will be open to traffic. Please plan ahead for extra travel time on US 40 to the State Park and use caution when entering or exiting the park driveways on US 40.

The portion of the Union Dam Trail underneath the US 40 bridge is closed for construction. The section of the river underneath the bridge is also closed to kayakers and canoers.

Updates on the overall project schedule and the long-term lane shifts and closures along westbound US 40 will be posted as the project moves forward. Look for these updates on the "Schedule" part of the US 40 project webpage.

Weather permitting, the project will be complete mid- summer 2013.
