8/16/2019The new MD 180 roundabout at Mt. Zion Road is expected to open to traffic on Tuesday, August 20.

The contractor is currently installing temporary light poles and guard rail. Work is almost finished on the decorative median. Milling and temporary line striping are scheduled this Sunday and Monday.

7/19/2019This project is 30% complete and expected to finish at the end of this year.

The contractor closed the intersection of MD 180 and Mt. Zion Road on June 19 to begin construction of a roundabout. The road's asphalt was removed to subgrade. The contractor started excavation for the temporary erosion and sediment controls, using soil as fill-in roadway.

The graded aggregate base was delivered to the work site and the contractor is currently placing that in the roadway. Concrete pipes and inlets are being installed as well as curb and gutter.

6/7/2019News Release sent June 6, 2019:

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning a project that will improve safety and overall intersection operations at the MD 180 (Jefferson Pike)/Mt. Zion Road intersection in Jefferson. The $3 million project, which includes constructing a roundabout at the intersection, will be complete by the end of the year.

To expedite the project, MDOT SHA’s contractor, Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg, will close and detour MD 180 for eight weeks beginning after the Frederick County school system recess in mid-June (June 20). For motorists on MD 180, drivers will be detoured US 340, which runs parallel to MD 180. The detour for Mt. Zion Road will use Stone Road to Teen Barnes Road to MD 180 and back to Mt. Zion Road.

“Roundabouts are extremely effective at minimizing high-impact and serious crashes,” said MDOT SHA District Engineer John Concannon. “Since drivers are slowed as they negotiate roundabouts, angle crashes are sufficiently reduced, increasing safety for everyone who travels through this intersection.”

Since MDOT SHA started constructing roundabouts in 1994, there have been zero intersection-related fatalities. Approximately, 4,000 motorists travel through this intersection every day.

5/20/2019Construction of a roundabout at this intersection is scheduled to start spring 2019.

To expedite the project, MDOT SHA’s contractor, Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg, will close and detour MD 180 for eight weeks beginning after the Frederick County Public Schools 2018-2019 school year ends in late June. The intersection will reopen prior to the start of the new school year.
