Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Private Property

Uniform traffic control devices improve safety, reduce liability
It is the law. Maryland law requires private owners and managers to use Uniform Traffic Control Devices on properties used by public. This includes, but is not limited to: college campuses, office parks, medical centers, shopping centers, housing projects and government facilities. All signs, signals and pavement markings must be the same as you would see on a public roadway because they are instantly recognized and understood by drivers, pedestrians and bicycle riders.
It improves vehicular and pedestrian safety. According to National Safety Council statistics, substantial traffic accident fatalities occur on private roadways. Uniform Traffic Control Devices reduce the risk of missed directions and accidents.
It reduces the risk of being sued. Compliance with these laws reduces the property owner’s risk of being sued for damages should an accident occur.

Maryland Law – In 1998, Maryland adopted two new sections in the Maryland Vehicle law:
25-104.1 Restrictions on sale of traffic control devices – A person may not sell or offer for sale any sign, signal, marking, or other device intended to regulate, warn or guide traffic unless it conforms with the state manual and specifications adopted pursuant to 25-104 of this subtitle.
25-106.1 Restrictions on placement of traffic control devices – A person may not install or maintain, in any area of private property used by the public, any sign, signal, marking or other devices intended to regulate, warn or guide traffic unless it conforms with state manual and specifications adopted pursuant to 25-104 of this subtitle.
It costs less to do it right the first time - There is no need to spend a lot of extra time and money. If you have sheduled new marking and signingfor your property, these guidlines will help you apply them correctly. Re-evaluate your property now to ensure compliance
