MD 0381 BRANDYWINE ROAD BRIDGE 1630500 OVER TIMOTHY BRANCH Picture
Project Name:
MD 381, Brandywine Road

Location of Project:
BRIDGE 1630500 OVER TIMOTHY BRANCH

Description:
Replace Bridge 1630500 over Timothy Branch.

Scope:
The existing structure, consisting of four 60” diameter pipes, on MD 381 over Timothy Branch in Prince George’s County is scheduled to be replaced. The pipes were installed as a temporary measure in 2011 when the previous bridge at this location was severely damaged by storm effects from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. This project will replace the temporary pipe structure with a more permanent bridge.

The proposed bridge will be a 25-foot long single-span bridge and will provide for two 12-foot lanes and two 6-foot shoulders. The main objectives of this project are to comply with the permit requirements and increase the width of the bridge to provide a safer travel area.

The proposed method for maintaining traffic involves closing the bridge and detouring traffic utilizing Missouri Avenue , Dyson Road and MD 381. Several options to rehabilitate the bridge while minimizing impacts to the public have been considered. The option of maintaining one alternating lane of traffic with temporary signals during construction would increase the duration of the project and create unsafe conditions for both motorists and construction workers. A complete closure of the roadway and traffic detour will allow the project to be completed in the shortest time period and in a safe manner. Based on past experience, it is anticipated that the bridge will reopen to traffic after three months of construction, weather permitting.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2018, which will allow Prince George’s County to complete their Cedarville Road project in the summer of 2017. It is anticipated that construction will be completed by early fall 2018, weather permitting. SHA will make every effort to complete this project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts on local residents and motorists.
