Status Updates
4/1/2019This project is complete.
9/17/2018This project is substantially complete. All lanes were opened by early July, 2018.
5/1/2018Following an early spring lane shift all traffic is running on the new northbound lanes. This has enabled reconstruction of the old US 113 into the new southbound dual highway lanes. Another shift is scheduled within the next few weeks - this will place traffic in the right lanes of the new dual highway, freeing the left lanes and providing a safety buffer for median work. All lanes will be open to traffic by early July.
1/17/2018The traffic shift scheduled for late 2017 was postponed and should occur this spring.
11/17/2017Grading, paving, guardrail installation and tree planting continue with most work concentrated toward the south end of the project. Significant progress has been made through the late summer and early fall months. Traffic will temporarily shift onto the new lanes in two phases beginning mid-November. These shifts will allow crews to begin rehabilitation of the old US 113 roadway, bringing the travel lanes and shoulders up to current standards and proper configuration for the new dual highway. No significant public impacts are expected with the traffic shifts. This project will be completed by spring 2018.
9/3/2017Paving continues for the new northbound lanes, with crews working through early September from south of Langmaid Rd. to Basket Switch Rd. Two layers or "lifts" of base asphalt are being placed with final surface paving scheduled for next spring when all base paving is complete.

A traffic shift is planned for early fall to place all traffic on the new northbound lanes, allowing crews to reconstruct the old roadway to serve as the new southbound lanes. Median bioswale work will also take place once the traffic shift is completed.
6/19/2017Soil cement work is underway from the northern project limit to the railroad crossing. This process helps lock the roadbed fill at final grade prior to placement of aggregate and paving. Base paving will begin in July and continue through the summer. The new MDDE Railroad crossing has been constructed near Newark Road.
3/15/2017Utility work continues to be the primary focus as crews from electric, cable and fiber companies relocate poles and wires and begin the process of placing some utilities underground. Grading and compaction have been moving along well at the north end. Additional trenching/pipe crossing operations will take place in mid to late March - these will require overnight US 113 closures and short detours using local roads.
12/7/2016Utility relocation, clearing, grading and pipe work will continue through the winter as weather permits.
10/3/2016Pipe crossing and grading work continue as weather permits. In early October a 72-inch diameter stormwater pipe will be placed across US 113. Fill and grading operations will continue through the fall although progress may be slowed by wet weather. Fill material needs several days or even weeks to dry before it can be graded and properly compacted.
8/19/2016Drainage work is underway and the first of many "pipe crossings" is scheduled for late August. This work requires a closure and detour of US 113 as crews need to excavate the roadway, install pipe up to 72 inches diameter, backfill and patch. Each crossing is expected to require a one-night closure.
6/2/2016Clearing and grubbing continue throughout the project. Substantial grading for the new northbound lanes is underway between Langmaid Road and Newark Road and will continue through the summer. Erosion and sediment controls are being installed at various locations and utility relocation work is underway throughout the project.
2/16/2016Clearing/grubbing will continue through the winter as weather permits, primarily along the northbound side of US 113. Motorists should be alert for trucks and construction equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
10/8/2015SHA awarded a $32 million construction contract for the US 113 Phase 3 dualization to Allan Myers of Worcester, PA. Initial work in late 2015 and early 2016 will consist of clearing/grubbing and drainage. Traffic impacts should be minimal.
1/1/2013Partial Engineering underway.
