8/22/2017Project planning was completed in 2010.
  • Phase 1, MD/WVa state line to MD 63, which includes widening the bridge over the Potomac River and constructing a third lane in each direction, is under construction. Additional information may be found on the construction project website: I-81, Maryland Veterans Memorial Highway (WA344_51)
  • Phase 1A, an auxiliary lane improvement project which includes widening and resurfacing along I-81 southbound from MD 58 to US 40, is under construction.
All remaining phases of the planning study will proceed as funding becomes available for final design, right of way acquisition and construction phases.

8/22/2017Project planning was completed in 2010.

8/14/2013The team received Design Approval from the SHA Administrator for this project on November 8, 2010 which concludes the Project Planning Process.
This project is not funded for final design, right of way acquisition, or construction at this time.
 
9/1/2010The study team has received approval on the IAPA document from FHWA. We will be moving forward with completion of the Design Approval package. We anticipate the completion of the planning study this Fall.
 
6/18/2010The study team is current addressing comments from FHWA on the IAPA document. We anticipate the completion of the planning study this Fall.
 
3/23/2010The Finding Of No Significant Impact (FONSI) document was signed by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on February 25, 2010. The study team is awaiting approval of the Interstate Access Point Approval (IAPA) document from FHWA.
 
1/4/2010The final Finding Of No Significant Impact (FONSI) document was submitted back to FHWA in late December 2009 for approval. The study team is currently preparing the Interstate Access Point Approval (IAPA) document for FHWA approval.
 
10/21/2009The preliminary Finding Of No Significant Impact (FONSI) document was submitted to FHWA on October 7, 2009 for approval. Comments are due back to SHA by November 9, 2009.
 
8/4/2009The SACM package has received concurrence from the Federal Highway Administration. The Finding Of No Significant Impact (FONSI) document is currently being updated.
 
12/18/2008The Department of Natural Resources has reviewed the project area of forest impacts and had concluded that the proposed project is not likely to adversely affect the endangered Indiana Bat.

Currently, the team is addressing comments received from U.S. Fish and Wild Life Service regarding the use of proposed back-up wetland mitigation sites.

 
8/28/2008The SACM has been resubmitted to the Agencies for their concurrence on the use of the back-up wetland mitigation site. The previously proposed wetland mitigation site is undergoing Stage II archeological investigation due to potential archeological impacts identified recently on the site.

In addition, the Study Team is addressing concerns raised by agencies about potential habits for an endangered species (Indiana Bat) in the vicinity of the project study area. Determinations are being made as whether the appropriate habitat exists for the Indiana Bat within the I-81 area of forest impacts.
 
7/23/2008The project Team is still waiting for Agencies' concurrence on the SACM .

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was mailed out in June to Agencies for concurrence as well.
 
4/28/2008The project team is currently waiting for concurrence on the Selected Alternative and Conceptual Mitigation (SACM) package from the federal and state environmental and regulatory agencies.
 
2/22/2008The team presented the revised Selected Alternate/Conceptual Mitigation package to the Agencies (2/20/2008). The next step is receiving their concurrence .
 
1/2/2008The comments received on the revised Selected Alternate/Conceptual Mitigation package have been addressed and the package is being finalized.
 
10/31/2007The team is revising the Selected Alternate/Conceptual Mitigation package.
 
6/21/2007The team is coordinating with the National Park Service on mitigation issues.
