9/17/2018The new bridge opened to traffic on June 12. Painting has been delayed due to weather; this work will continue into October. Restoration of the old swingspan bridge fender system continues with no marine traffic impacts. This fall MDOT SHA will pave the new bridge approaches with final surface asphalt. Occasional lane closures and flagging will continue as needed to accommodate the painting and paving.

5/1/2018The new bridge is scheduled to open by mid-June. Remaining work includes paving/striping, guardrail installation, bridge deck grooving for drainage/traction, deck sealing and landscaping.

1/29/2018Most work through the remainder of winter is concentrated on the east side in Caroline County and includes bridge railing installation, construction of the final bridge deck section and work on the old swingspan fender system in Choptank River. The new bridge will open to traffic in the spring.

11/29/2017Replacement of a cross-road pipe at the east side of the project is complete. Work on the new bridge will continue through the winter. The east abutment has been constructed and the last row of concrete girders has been set. Crews are installing metal deck pans and reinforcing steel in preparation for the final bridge deck concrete pours which could take place in December with good weather. Additional work through the winter and early spring includes new gutters and railing, grooving of the deck to improve traction and drainage, and paving of the realigned MD 331 bridge approaches (spring). The new bridge will open to traffic in spring 2018.

9/3/2017All of the "surcharge" fill has been removed from the east approach area. This material was placed last December for weight, to compress the marshy subsoil. The area has been rough graded for the new approach roadway and work is underway on the east abutment.

6/19/2017The bridge deck pours have been completed. Work continues on the bridge railing and new fender system for the swingspan bridge being preserved as an historic landmark. The final fill stage quarantine period at the east abutment will expire late July - if no additional settling of the area is recorded crews will remove the "surcharge" fill that was placed last year for weight. Construction of the east abutment would then begin by late August.

4/5/2017Crews continue to pump/pour concrete for the new bridge deck. This work will continue through the spring with occasional daytime lane closures/flagging.

1/18/2017The east embankment fill operations are complete. The final "surcharge" layer was placed prior to the holidays and will settle for eight months. This layer is needed primarily just for weight. If no significant settling occurs the surcharge layer will be removed by mid-summer and construction of the abutment and bridge approach roadway can begin.

1/1/2017Construction underway.

1/6/2015A contract for the project in the amount of $47,978,312 was awarded in August to McLean Contracting Company, Glen Burnie. A notice to proceed was approved by SHA on November 20, 2014 and a schedule for construction has been approved for mid-January. The first work on the project will be related to placing coffer dams in the river and other erosion and sediment controls for environmental protection purposes. The bridge replacement project is slated for completion in November 2019.
