1/17/2018This project is substantially complete. MDOT would like to thank motorists, businesses and area residents for their patience. Remaining work consists primarily of landscaping and completion of the large wetland mitigation area east of US 301. These tasks will continue into the spring 2018 planting season with no impacts to travel lanes.

11/17/2017US 301 paving through the work area is now complete. Work continues on the bioswales near Rolling Bridge Road and shoulders along US 301. This project will be substantially complete by the end of 2017, several months ahead of schedule. MDOT would like to thank motorists and businesses for their patience. Remaining work will primarily be landscaping and completion of the wetland mitigation area east of US 301. These tasks will continue into the spring 2018 planting season with no impacts to travel lanes.

9/3/2017The new overpass opened to traffic on August 15, 2017. Three of the four interchange ramps are open. The ramp to northbound US 301 remains under construction with completion expected in October. The posted detour for northbound US 301 is southbound US 301 to southbound MD 213 to northbound US 301.

In conjunction with the overpass opening, the Rolling Bridge Rd. median crossover at US 301 will be permanently closed. Work continues on the Rolling Bridge acceleration/deceleration lanes as part of the conversion of both legs of Rolling Bridge Rd. to right turns only.

6/19/2017The bridge deck has been poured. Crews are working on the overpass sidewalks and parapets (walls), paving the bridge approaches/interchange ramps and preparing to shift traffic onto the new overpass by late summer.

3/14/2017Steel beams have been set across US 301. Crews are placing deck pans and reinforcing steel and preparing to pump/pour concrete for the new bridge deck. This work will continue through early spring and will require occasional single lane closures on both northbound and southbound US 301.

12/20/2016Crews continue to make good progress in many areas of the project. The overpass east abutment wall has been poured and pile driving is underway for the west abutment. With good weather SHA may be able to set steel beams across US 301 in March. The west roundabout, new park-and-ride lot and ramps to and from southbound US 301 are nearly complete. Because temperatures are now too cold for final surface paving these areas must remain closed to traffic until the spring.

12/1/2016Construction of the east abutment is underway. With favorable weather this work will continue through the winter - the pile driving operation will move across US 301 to the west abutment area while form and concrete work continue on the east side. Current plans call for the steel beams to be set over US 301 in February. This work depends on completion of the abutments and may require intermittent or full overnight road closures. SHA will notify the general public and trucking industry at least one week prior to any closure.

9/19/2016The median piers and pier cap have been poured. Grading continues on the ramp from the east side roundabout to northbound US 301. The settlement/quarantine period for the two bridge approach fill areas continues. If settlement data is favorable crews may begin constructing the overpass abutments (supporting end walls) this fall.

5/9/2016US 301 to MD 304 west access remains closed for stream relocation work and construction of the west roundabout. Detour signs are posted. MD 304 east of US 301 has been temporarily relocated to allow construction of the east roundabout. New business entrances have been established. Left turns from US 301 onto MD 304 have been eliminated - motorists should use the nearby J-turns. Construction of the overpass pier in the US 301 median is underway; pile driving will be followed by extensive form work and pouring of the new concrete pier later this summer.

2/18/2016TRAFFIC ALERT: Beginning on or about March 1, SHA will close all lanes of MD 304 at Tidewater Drive, just west of US 301. Tidewater Drive and the Park & Ride lot will also be closed. These closures are necessary for drainage work, grading and construction of a roundabout. Detour signs will be posted. The closures will remain in effect throughout this construction phase, into early 2017. Temporary access to Tidewater Drive will be provided from southbound US 301.

12/11/2015The new left turn lanes from US 301 to MD 305 are now open to traffic. Work will continue around this intersection and motorists are urged to remain alert for construction workers, equipment and changing conditions.

10/8/2015Work on the large box culvert system that will carry a stream across US 301 will continue through fall 2015 and require numerous lane closures and traffic shifts. Currently, crews are installing precast box culvert pieces in the US 301 median and left lane of US 301 south. This requires a shift of southbound US 301 traffic onto the right shoulder. Motorists are urged to use caution when driving through the work zone - reduce speed and be alert for workers, equipment and changing conditions.

7/23/2015Work continues on the extensive box culvert system that must be created to carry a small stream across US 301 and through the new interchange area. This work has been concentrated along southbound US 301 through the spring and early summer. Beginning in late July similar construction will begin along northbound US 301 just past MD 304. This will require closure of the right lane and part of the acceleration lane on US 301 just north of MD 304.

5/1/2015Joined by State, county and local officials, the SHA project team and members of the Support Overpass 4 Students (SO4S) marked the start of the construction for the new US 301 / MD 304 interchange project on Tuesday, September 23, 2014.

Work is underway at the construction site. Crews are now relocating utilities, and working at the wetland mitigation Site. SHA is also constructing several small structures along southbound 301 at MD 304 as part of the interchange project. Completion of the J-Turn work is expected in late summer 2015.
