1/14/2019The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is evaluating a roadway improvement project along MD 190 (River Road) between Braeburn Parkway and Pyle Road in Montgomery County. The project will improve traffic operations and safety for motorists and pedestrians within this segment of MD 190. Design of the project will not be finalized until we obtain a consensus with the community regarding the scope of improvements.

DESIGN OPTIONS: The proposed improvements include: Braeburn Parkway-Installation of a full traffic signal at Braeburn Parkway. The addition of a signal at this location will provide safer movement for all directions of travel. Pyle Road-Installation of pedestrian-activated traffic signals on eastbound and westbound MD 190 at the crosswalk in the vicinity of Pyle Road.

There are two options being proposed for the pedestrian crossing.
- Option 1 - Install the traffic signal at the existing marked crosswalk
- Option 2 - Relocate the pedestrian crossing closer to Walt Whitman High School, with a sidewalk connection to the existing sidewalk adjacent to the school’s athletic fields.

This improvement will provide a safer road crossing for pedestrians.

Implemented Features-Braeburn Parkway
- Reduction of the speed limit from 45 to 35 MPH from I 495 (Capital Beltway) to Brookside Drive. This will reduce vehicle speeds and provide a more consistent speed limit throughout the corridor. (Implemented December 2018)

This project is fully funded for preliminary design and construction; however, design completion and construction dates have not yet been confirmed and are subject to change.
