MDOT SHA TO RESURFACE US 29 (COLESVILLE ROAD) IN SILVER SPRING

Project to Greatly Improve Ride Quality for Thousands of Drivers in Montgomery County

(November 23, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning a project to resurface nearly one-mile of US 29 (Colesville Road) between MD 97 (Georgia Avenue)  and St. Andrews Way (near Sligo Creek Parkway) in downtown Silver Spring. The $1.9 million project should be complete by summer 2019. In addition to patching, milling, paving and restriping US 29, crews will also install concrete bus pads to preserve pavement from heavy buses and clean and repair, as needed, storm water management systems. MDOT SHA will also upgrade sidewalk ramps to meet ADA requirements and concrete curb and gutter.“This project is located in the heart of the business district of Silver Spring and is a major commuting route for thousands of motorists, as well as a significant number of pedestrians,” said MDOT SHA District Engineer Andre Futrell. “MDOT SHA will make every attempt to minimize construction-related delays by working during off-peak hours but motorists are encouraged to plan extra commuting time or use alternate routes in the area.”Pedestrian traffic will be maintained during construction but may be directed to the nearest signalized intersection for safe crossings. MDOT SHA’s contractor, Bardon Inc./Aggregate Industries of Greenbelt, is permitted to close a single lane Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Sunday nights through Friday mornings between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. There is a range of between 35,000-56,000 vehicles that use this section of US 29 on average. While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.  For a list of all major MDOT SHA projects, click on Road Ready, MDOT SHA's electronic construction brochure.
