6/17/2019This project is 98% complete and expected to finish this summer.

The contractor recently finished the final surface paving and girder painting. The erosion and sediment controls on the north side of westbound MD 26 have been removed.

Currently, the contractor is staining the architectural treatment on the bridge. There may be overnight partial ramp closures on westbound MD 26 as crews continue staining and remove the girder paint decking.

Recently, MDOT SHA finished paving southbound US 15 from the Tuscarora Creek bridge to Motter Avenue.

The new Park and Ride on Monocacy Boulevard will open by the end of this month. It has 400 parking spaces and includes a bus depot.

4/16/2019This project is 96% complete and expected to finish spring 2019.

There are temporary pavement markings on northbound U.S. 15 as crews complete the final surface paving. The layout for the landscaping is done and planting should begin soon. Bridge staining and girder painting are also expected to start shortly.

Please be advised that traffic drums have been removed from northbound U.S. 15 at the bridge and from the westbound MD 26 ramp to southbound U.S. 15. There may be temporary lane closures on northbound U.S. 15 in the spring to allow crews to complete their work.
 
2/19/2019PROJECT UPDATES.

On US 15 NB, we are in Phase #3 Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) with a temporary pavement marking configuration until final surface paving is completed in the Spring.

Bridge staining, painting of the girders, and landscaping is scheduled to take place in the Spring.

Traffic drums have been removed along MD 26 WB.


IMPACT TO CITIZENS.

Citizens should continue to be aware of new traffic patterns on US 15 Northbound. On US 15 NB at Bridge, traffic drums have been removed and replaced by a temporary pavement marking configuration.

Citizens should also take caution on MD 26 WB ramp to US 15 South. Traffic drums have been removed from this area.

Lane closures on US 15 NB are scheduled to resume in the Spring.
 
1/17/2019•PROJECT UPDATES:

Traffic has switched to Phase #3 Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) which places traffic over the newly completed Phase #2 bridge and roadway.

On US 15 NB, on the left shoulder at the bridge, traffic drums have been removed and replaced by a temporary pavement marking configuration until final surface paving is completed in the Spring

Grading has been completed in the core area south of MD 26 WB in the area that was the stockpile. Grading, guardrail installation, and stabilization has been completed along the shoulders of MD 26 WB ramp to US 15 SB to just past the US 15 NB and SB bridges. Consequently, concrete traffic barriers have also been removed along this roadway and replaced with traffic drums.

•IMPACT TO CITIZENS.

Citizens should continue to be aware of new traffic patterns on US 15 Northbound.

On US 15 NB at Bridge, traffic drums have been removed and replaced by a temporary pavement marking configuration.

Citizens continue to be aware construction traffic present during the day along US 15 Northbound especially at the MD 26 ramps and on the MD 26 Westbound ramp approaching US 15 Southbound. Be aware of construction equipment crossing and increased truck traffic in these areas entering and exiting from the shoulder behind barrier wall. Be especially cautious when truck signs are present.

Lane closures on US 15 are scheduled to resume in the Spring.

o Citizens should continue to be aware of new traffic patterns on US 15 Northbound. Another traffic switch is anticipated for late September or early October.

o Citizens continue to be aware of heavy construction traffic present during the day along US 15 Northbound especially at the MD 26 ramps and on MD 26 Westbound ramp approaching US 15 Southbound. Be aware of construction equipment crossing and increased truck traffic in these areas entering and exiting from behind barrier wall. Be especially cautious when truck signs are present.

o Continue to be aware of periodic night time lane closures and temporary road closures on US 15 Northbound between Motter Avenue and Monocacy Blvd and on MD 26 Westbound ramp to US 15 South where trucks will be entering and exiting from job site.

o Backfilling at both Abutments continues.
o Girders #5 through #9 have been set for Phase #2 Bridge Construction

3/20/2018-Excavation continues for Phase #2 of the Bridge.
-Foundation Concrete for the North Abutment (Abutment B) has been poured and excavation for the South Abutment (Abutment A) continues.

-Demolition of the existing bridge and piers is complete and excavation has begun for the foundation of the Phase #2 Bridge.

Be aware of construction equipment crossing and increased truck traffic entering and exiting from behind barrier wall and at the MD 26 ramps entering/exiting US 15 Northbound.
-Continue to be aware of periodic night time lane closures and temporary road closures on US 15 Northbound between Motter Avenue and Hayward Road and MD 26 Westbound ramp onto US 15 South where trucks will be entering and exiting from job site.
 
1/16/2018-US 15 North Bound traffic shift was completed on 1/10/2018.
-Phase # 2 work has begun with the demolition of the existing bridge and piers.
 
12/18/2017- Placement of Phase 1 US 15 Northbound Bridge #1009701 and roadway has been complete. Contractor is in the process of completing bio-swales and landscaping as well as installing guardrails in US 15 median. Traffic will move to the newly created roadway so that phase two construction can begin.



 
11/20/2017-Placement of Phase 1 Parapet Wall for US 15 Northbound Bridge #1009701 has been completed as well as roadway sub-base. Contractor is continuing Phase #1 roadway placement; they are currently placing Hot Mix Asphalt (blacktop) for upcoming traffic switch.

-For this upcoming month plans are in place to begin Phase #2 bridge construction. This involves a traffic switch that will include a left traffic shift over to the soon to be completed Phase #1 roadway. Once the traffic switch is completed Phase #2 construction can begin.
 
10/16/2017The bridge deck for US 15 Northbound has been completed. Crews prepare to place the parapet walls and then the roadway will be placed.

 
9/18/2017Crews have set structural steel for the new northbound bridge and have began the process of placing deck pans on the new steel. Once all deck pans are in place, crews will pour the concrete bridge deck.
 
8/15/2017Crews are preparing to set structural steel for the new bridge. The week of 8/21/17, crews will set the steel. When placing the steel, crews will close the roadway for 15 minute increments so that cranes can safely lift the steel.
 
6/23/2017As of June 23rd, Construction of bridge substructure at the south abutment continues. Construction of sub-foundation concrete and footing concrete has been completed on north abutment.
 
5/3/2017- Excavation and installation of support systems has been completed on the south abutment (bridge support). Sub foundation concrete has been placed and currently we are forming the south abutment.

- Excavation and installation of support systems continues on the north abutment.
 
3/21/2017As temperatures begin to increase, crews continue to construct bridge supports and complete excavation.
 
2/14/2017Excavation continues for the new section of the North bound bridge south abutment (support). Scheduled work is to begin this month on the North abutment (support).
 
1/30/2017Crews are now excavating on the north side of the bridge. A stabilization wall will be constructed to support widening and construction efforts.
 
12/19/2016Excavation has begun for roadway widening in the median along US 15 north bound on both sides of the existing bridge.
 
10/18/2016Crews recently completed demolition of the west portion of the bridge deck (riding surface.)
 
9/21/2016In an ongoing effort to improve work zone safety, the Maryland State Police (MSP) and the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will deploy the Maryland SafeZones Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) system along northbound US 15 (Catoctin Mountain Highway) at the MD 26 interchange in Frederick County.

Operators will use ASE cameras at the bridge replacement project over MD 26 to enforce the 55 mph speed limit in the construction zone. After a 21-day warning period, MSP will authorize citations starting Thursday, October 13. Drivers excessively speeding by 12 or more miles over the speed limit, or 67 mph or more, face a $40 civil citation.

6/22/2016STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION BEGINS BRIDGE REPLACEMENT AT US 15 OVER MD 26 IN FREDERICK COUNTY

Traffic Will Be Maintained During Construction; Motorist Advised to Slow Down and Stay Alert

(June 22, 2016) – On Tuesday, July 5 the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a $5.8 million project to replace the US 15 Bridge over MD 26 (Liberty Road) in Frederick County. The project should be complete summer 2017, weather permitting.

The 59-year old steel girder bridge is safe, but has outlived its useful life and will be replaced. The project also includes replace concrete supports and piers, installing a new bridge deck (driving surface) and paving the bridge approaches.
Work will be complete in two phases to maintain all travel lanes for drivers throughout the project. The nearly 21,000 motorists that use the US 15 Bridge over MD 26 each day may encounter lane shifts and narrow travel lanes.

SHA’s contractor for the bridge replacement is Flippo Construction Company, Inc. of Forestville.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
