6/12/2017The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is replacing the deck of the two-lane MD 6 (Charles Street) bridge over Zekiah Swamp. The bridge, located southeast of LaPlata, was built in 1933 and later widened in 1970. MD 6 is a primary travel route for traffic traveling between US 301 and MD 5.
SHA awarded the $2.7 million project to Marine Technologies, Inc. of Baltimore, MD. The project will replace the existing concrete bridge deck and repair the supports and approaches to the bridge. The rehabilitated bridge will have slightly wider shoulders to improve safety.
Two-way traffic will be maintained in a single lane with the use of a system of temporary traffic signals to alternate traffic through the work zone at the bridge while completing the work in two stages. The project is expected to be complete in the Spring of 2018.
