7/25/2018CONSTRUCTION UPDATE - SUMMER 2018

Contractor crews are performing final construction work summer 2018 along northbound I-695 and along US 1 and Benson Avenue underneath I-695.

I-695, US 1, and Benson Avenue will remain open to traffic during peak travel hours. There may be temporary overnight single and double lane closures along northbound I-695 in Arbutus, Sunday - Thursday nights between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next day.

Please plan ahead for extra travel time along I-695 at night and look ahead for lane closures and construction personnel and equipment in the work zone. Weather and other construction factors permitting, the entire project in Arbutus will be complete late summer 2018.

7/25/2018CONSTRUCTION UPDATE - SUMMER 2018

The new bridges carrying northbound I-695 (Baltimore Beltway Inner Loop) over Benson Avenue, AMTRAK, US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) and Leeds Avenue are open to traffic as of December 2017.

This spring, contractor crews will perform final construction work along northbound I-695 and along US 1 and Benson Avenue underneath I-695. I-695, US 1, and Benson Avenue will remain open to traffic during peak travel hours.

There may be temporary overnight single and double lane closures along northbound I-695 in Arbutus, Sunday - Thursday nights between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next day.

1/4/2018CONSTRUCTION UPDATE - WINTER 2018

The new bridges carrying northbound I-695 (Baltimore Beltway Inner Loop) over Benson Avenue, AMTRAK, US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) and Leeds Avenue are open to traffic as of December 2017.

Crews will perform construction work on I-695 and on US 1 and Benson Avenue underneath I-695 as weather permits this winter and spring.

I-695, US 1, and Benson Avenue will remain open to traffic during peak travel hours.

Weather and other construction factors permitting, the entire project in Arbutus will be complete spring 2018.

 
11/1/2017CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC ALERT - FALL 2017

On or after Wednesday night, November 8, 2017 crews will perform a traffic lane shift on the two new bridges carrying northbound I-695 (Beltway Inner Loop) Benson Ave, AMTRAK /MARC Rail, US 1 and Leeds Avenue).

At that time the I-695 Inner Loop will be placed into the final and permanent lane configuration on the new bridges. There will be no increase in the number of through travel lanes; however, the temporary 11 ft. lane width during construction will be re-set to 12 ft.

MDOT SHA will place digital message signs on the I-695 Inner Loop to advise motorists of the date of the traffic shift.

The traffic shift will be done overnight, with temporary single and double lane closures in effect. Maryland State Police will be on site during the traffic lane shift. Please plan ahead for extra travel time on the I-695 Inner Loop between 7 p.m. November 8 and 5 a.m. November 9.

Weather permitting, the new traffic pattern on the I-695 Inner Loop will be in effect Thursday morning, November 9. In case of inclement weather, the traffic shift will be done on the next possible weeknight (Sunday - Thursday nights).
 
7/17/2017CONSTRUCTION UPDATE - SUMMER 2017

Crews will continue construction work on I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) and on US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) and Benson Avenue underneath I-695 through the summer and fall of 2017.

I-695, US 1, and Benson Avenue will remain open to traffic during peak travel hours. There will be long-term travel lane shifts on I-695, with concrete barriers along I-695 in the work zone.

There will also be temporary night-time lane closures, traffic flagging operations and late-night traffic drags / intermittent total stoppages on I-695, US 1 and Benson Avenue during construction work.

Maryland's SafeZones Automated Speed Enforcement is in effect within the work zone. The work zone speed limit is 55 mph. Transportation Article § 21-810, effective Oct. 1, 2009 allows the use of cameras to fine drivers exceeding speeding by 12 mph or more in work zones along controlled access roadways with a 45 mph or higher speed limit. The civil fine is $40 and no points are assessed against your driver's license.

The entire project is currently scheduled for completion late fall 2017, weather and other construction factors permitting.

11/3/2016***CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC ALERT***NEW RAMP OPENING***

On November 3, SHA opened the new interchange ramp connection from US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) to northbound I-695 (Beltway Inner Loop). This ramp replaces the old Leeds Avenue ramp to I-695 which is permanently closed.

Please use caution while driving along US 1 in Arbutus during fall 2016 as motorists learn of the new traffic pattern in the interchange area.
 
8/31/2016CONSTRUCTION UPDATE - LATE SUMMER 2016

During construction, I-695, US 1, Leeds Avenue and Benson Avenue will remain open to traffic during peak travel hours.

There will be long-term lane shifts and temporary night-time lane closures on I-695 and temporary night-time lane closures, flagging operations and late-night traffic drags or intermittent total stoppages on US 1, Leeds Avenue and Benson Avenue during construction work.

Crews are currently working on the I-695 bridges and will continue during the next year. The Leeds Avenue ramp to I-695 North (Inner Loop) was permanently closed in spring 2015 and the ramp detour route is still in effect. The new US 1 Ramp to I-695 North is under construction and is currently slated to open fall 2016.

Drivers traveling from Leeds Avenue and other points in Arbutus to I-695 North/Inner Loop will be diverted to a detour route using southbound US 1, northbound I-195, and northbound I-95 back to northbound I-695.

A map of the the detour route is posted on this project webpage under "Maps." Weather permitting, the entire project will be complete late summer 2017.

The Leeds Avenue Ramp to I-695 North (Inner Loop) was permanently closed in spring 2015 and the ramp detour route is still in effect until the new US 1 Ramp to I-695 North is complete (target date: spring 2016)

Drivers traveling from Leeds Avenue and other points in Arbutus to I-695 North/Inner Loop will be diverted to a detour route using southbound US 1, northbound I-195, and northbound I-95 back to northbound I-695. A map of the the detour route is posted on this project webpage under "Maps."

During construction, I-695, US 1, Leeds Avenue and Benson Avenue will remain open to traffic during peak travel hours. Crews are currently working on replacing the the bridge carrying I-695 over Benson Avenue., and will continue to work as weather permits during winter 2015.

4/14/2015CONSTRUCTION UPDATE - Leeds Avenue Ramp to I-695 North Permanently Closed as of April 14, 2015; Ramp Detour Route in Effect Until New US 1 Ramp to I-695 Opens Spring 2016

SHA and its contractor, Concrete General, have permanently closed the ramp from Leeds Avenue to I-695 North (Beltway Inner Loop). During the next year, the contractor will construct a new ramp that will provide a direct connection from US 1 (Southwestern Blvd.) to I-695 North. Weather permitting, the new ramp will be open summer 2016.

Drivers traveling from Leeds Avenue and other points in Arbutus to I-695 North/Inner Loop will be diverted to a detour route using southbound US 1, northbound I-195, and northbound I-95 back to northbound I-695. A map of the the detour route is posted on this project webpage under "Maps."

During construction, I-695, US 1, Leeds Avenue and Benson Avenue will remain open to traffic during peak travel hours.

3/17/2015CONSTRUCTION UPDATE - LEEDS AVENUE RAMP CLOSURE APRIL 2015

SHA and its contractor, Concrete General, will permanently close the ramp from Leeds Avenue to northbound I-695 (Beltway Inner Loop) in early April 2015.

A construction traffic sign has been posted at the ramp to notify drivers of the upcoming ramp closure. Digital message signs will inform drivers in advance of the actual date of the ramp closure.

Once the Leeds Avenue ramp is closed to traffic, drivers traveling from Leeds Avenue and other points in Arbutus to the inner loop of I-695 will be diverted to a detour route using southbound US 1, northbound I-195, and northbound I-95 back to northbound I-695.

During construction, I-695, US 1, Leeds Avenue and Benson Avenue remain open to traffic during peak travel hours. There will be long-term lane shifts and temporary night-time lane closures on I-695 and temporary night-time lane closures, flagging operations and late-night traffic drags on US 1, Leeds Avenue and Benson Avenue during construction.
 
12/1/2014SHA has issued a Notice To Proceed to its construction contractor, Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg, MD.

The I-695 inner loop bridge replacement project, the closure of the ramp from Leeds Avenue to I-695 and the construction of a new ramp from US 1 to I-695 inner loop to US 1, and the reconstruction of US 1 between Knecht Avenue to Linden Avenue have been combined into one construction project contract.

Utility line relocations are underway within the project area. The highway contractor will perform construction work at the project site as weather permits during winter 2014-2015.

SHA will permanently close the ramp from Leeds Avenue to northbound I-695 (inner loop) in early spring 2015, on a date to be announced. SHA will post signs on Leeds Avenue in advance of the ramp closure.
 
7/24/2014SHA hosted a Public Meeting / Open House to inform area residents and business owners about future projects on I-695 and US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard). SHA previously hosted a public meeting about projects 1 and 2 in 2012.

1) Replace the two bridges carrying the I-695 inner loop over Benson Avenue, AMTRAK, US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) and Leeds Avenue. Reconstruction of US 1 between Linden Avenue and Knecht Avenue from a four-lane highway to a two-lane highway with turn lanes, bicycle lanes and sidewalks

2) Closing the existing interchange ramp from Leeds Avenue to the I-695 inner loop and constructing a new interchange ramp from US 1, over Leeds Avenue, to the I-695 inner loop.

New Projects:

3) On I-695, replace the median barrier separating the inner loop and outer loop of I-695 between south of I-895 and I-95 (1.2 miles of barrier)

4) On US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard), reconstruct and reconfigure two more sections of US 1 from a four-lane highway to a two-lane highway with turn lanes, bicycle lanes and sidewalks, to improve multi-modal access along US 1 and to the MARC Halethorpe Station:

Southern Section: from US 1 Alt. to the Linden Avenue Spur.

Northern Section: from Knecht Avenue to the Baltimore City Line.
