Alternatives for Workshop
This is a PDF Attachment, double click to view:June 2017: Alternative 1 - No Build June 2017: Alternative 1 - No Build

Alternative 1 - No Build for the I-70 at MD 65 Project Planning Study:
  • Serves as a baseline for comparing the impacts and benefits associated with the build alternatives;
  • Proposes minor short-term improvements as part of routine maintenance and safety operations;
  • Does not address the purpose and need for the project.

Alternative 4 Modified: Partial Cloverleaf – I-70 Inside Widening for the I-70 at MD 65 project Planning Study would include the following improvements:
  • Provides a combination of directional loop ramps and diamond interchange ramps in opposite quadrants of the interchange;
  • Reduces the number signalized movements along MD 65, by eliminating left-turn conflicts between vehicles getting onto I 70 and oncoming traffic along MD 65;
  • Relocates the I-70 westbound off-ramp approximately 600 feet north;
  • At the end of the ramp, a signalized left-turn-only movement to southbound MD 65 is added with a dedicated merge lane in the median to southbound MD 65;
  • The traffic signal immediately north of I-70 stops only northbound MD 65 traffic;
  • A loop ramp is provided from northbound MD 65 to westbound I-70 in this quadrant of the interchange;
  • Retains the I-70 eastbound off-ramp and adds a signalized left turn at the end of the ramp, with a dedicated merge lane in the median to northbound MD 65;
  • The traffic signal immediately south of I-70 stops only southbound MD 65 traffic;
  • Retains the existing loop ramp from southbound MD 65 to eastbound I-70 in this quadrant of the interchange.

Alternative 2A VE 1 for the I-70 at MD 65 Project Planning study provides for a Modified Diamond Interchange with Westbound I-70 Off-Loop Ramp. The main difference between Alternative 2A and Alternative 2A VE 1 is how traffic coming from I-70 westbound travels onto MD 65 southbound.

Alternative 2A VE 1:
  • Replaces the I-70 westbound off ramp with a loop ramp in the northwest quadrant of the interchange;
  • Requires outside widening on the I-70 eastbound bridge over MD 65 for the loop ramp deceleration lane;
  • The existing I-70 off ramp will continue to be used for traffic traveling from westbound I-70 to northbound MD 65;
  • Changes the traffic signal north of I-70 from a full signal to a half signal allowing northbound traffic on MD 65 to continue without stopping;
  • Reduces impacts to private property in the northeast quadrant of the interchange, thereby reducing the overall project cost; and
  • Reduces the number of new bridges over the CSX railroad, resulting in reduced project construction cost and bridge maintenance cost.

Alternative 2A for the I-70 at MD 65 Project Planning Study:
  • Reconstructs most of the I-70/MD 65 interchange by reconfiguring it to a traditional diamond interchange and eliminates the existing loop ramps;
  • Aligns the proposed ramps to and from I-70 eastbound to utilize as much of the existing off-ramp alignment as possible;
  • The new directional on-ramp from northbound MD 65 to eastbound I-70 will fully impact the existing park-and-ride lot, causing it to be closed;
  • Requires new bridges over the CSX rail line for the new interchange ramps;
  • Improves the safety and simplifies the maintenance of traffic during construction by continuing to use the existing I-70 eastbound loop ramps on the south side of I-70 while new diamond interchange ramps are constructed;
  • A new third through-lane in each direction along I-70 will be added within the existing median.
