Improvements for MD 5 include two northbound (NB) and two southbound lanes (SB), separated by an 18-foot raised median. At major intersections, the median narrows to accommodate left-turn lanes. A seven-foot-wide outside shoulder located on both sides of MD 5 would provide an on-road facility for bicyclists and horse and carriage traffic. A five-foot wide sidewalk would be included on both sides of MD 5 to improve pedestrian mobility and safety. Vehicular circulation is improved by including a dedicated right turn lane from MD 5 South to MD 5 Business (Washington Ave) South, and an additional left-turn lane from MD 245 South onto MD 5 South. At MD 5 and Abell Street/Moakley Street, MD 5 would be widened to include a single SB left-turn lane onto Moakley Street, and a single NB left-turn lane onto Abell Street. A six-foot wide raised median would be provided to separate the left-turn lanes from traffic traveling in the opposite direction. Option 4, included as part of Alternative 4, changes Leonardtown Centre Shopping Plaza traffic access. The right turn movement from MD 243 South onto Merchants Lane is removed; and the left turn from Merchants Lane onto MD 243 North is prohibited. As a replacement, a double left-turn into the shopping plaza from MD 5 North would be added further west at the location of the existing right-in/right-out entrance with MD 5 South and the shopping plaza. In addition, a proposed traffic signal would be added at the intersection of MD 5 South at the shopping center entrance.
