US 0113 RE BELAIR DOVER ROAD SOUTH OF SNOW HILL TO THE DELAWARE LINE
Project Name:
US 113, Worcester Highway

Location of Project:
SOUTH OF SNOW HILL TO THE DELAWARE LINE

Description:
Upgrade existing US 113 as a 4 lane divided highway, including access controls from north of MD 365, Public Landing Road, to Five Mile Branch (4.3 miles). Bicycle and pedestrian accommodations will be included where appropriate.

Scope:
US 113 is a major north-south artery in Worcester County, Maryland serving both traffic on the Delmarva Peninsula and through-traffic between Virginia and Delaware. The US 2000 Census showed Worcester County experiencing the third fastest population growth in Maryland, at 32.9 percent, between 1990 and 2000. In addition, US 113 is a major gateway for summer vacationers heading to two very popular Maryland beaches just a few miles east of the highway. An average of 11,500 vehicles a day (20 percent trucks) travel this section of US 113 between Snow Hill and Berlin with 20-year projections reaching 25,000 vehicles a day.

At the time the study was done, the entire US 113 corridor demonstrated a need for improvement due to the high number of fatal accidents along two-lane portions of US 113 over 17+ years before the study was done, at a rate exceeding the statewide average for similar two-lane rural highways in Maryland. As such, SHA has undertook the task of dualizing the US 113 corridor from the Delaware line to Pocomoke City to alleviate this safety issue.

The dualization of the northern section of the US 113 (7.5 miles) between US 50 (Ocean Gateway) and the Delaware line was completed in 2003. This dualized US 113 from Pocomoke City to Snow Hill and from south of Berlin to the Delaware line. With the completion of US 113 Phase 1, 2A and 2B in the southern study area, US 113 has now been dualized 8.3 miles of the 16.3-mile between Snow Hill and Berlin. Phase 3, and Phase 4 projects will complete the remaining 8-mile section of dualization. Phase 5 focuses improvements on the US 113 and MD 12 intersection.
