Project Name:
MD 68, East Lappans Road

Location of Project:
BRIDGE 2108500 OVER WINCHESTER AND WESTERN RAILROAD

Description:
Study to Rehabilitate Bridge 2108500 over Winchester and Western Railroad.

Scope:
The bridge on MD 68 (Lappans Road) crossing Winchester and Western Railroad in Washington County is scheduled for rehabilitation. Originally constructed in 1965, the bridge is safe for the traveling public, but the bridge deck surface is nearing the end of its useful service life. Should the deterioration continue, weight restrictions (reduced loads for trucks) would need to be posted to ensure safety. Rehabilitating the bridge at this time will save money on future maintenance spending, and support safety and mobility as a part of SHA’s bridge preservation program.

Multiple alternatives for maintaining traffic along MD 68 during construction are being considered. These include maintaining traffic in a single lane with the use of a system of temporary traffic signals to alternate traffic through the work zone at the bridge, and detouring westbound traffic on MD 68 at the bridge while maintaining eastbound traffic.

At this time no definitive construction schedule has been set, but we anticipate the project duration will last one construction season (spring-fall). SHA will make every effort to complete the project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists.
