Project Name:
MD 56, Big Pool Road

Location of Project:
BRIDGE 2109600 OVER MD I-70

Description:
Study to rehabilitate Bridge 2109600 over I-70.

Scope:
The bridge on MD 56 (Big Pool Road) crossing I-70 is scheduled for rehabilitation. Originally constructed in 1964, the bridge is safe for the traveling public, but the roadway surface is nearing the end of its useful service life. Should the deterioration continue, weight restrictions (reduced loads for trucks) would need to be posted to ensure safety. This would have a significant impact on the local economy and operations at the gas station. The rehabilitated bridge will provide slightly wider shoulders to improve safety and provide a travel area for cyclists. Rehabilitating the bridge at this time will save money on future maintenance spending and support safety and mobility as part of SHA’s bridge system preservation program.

Several alternatives for maintaining traffic along MD 56 during construction were considered, including maintaining two lanes of traffic across the bridge and a complete detour of MD 56. It was determined that the bridge is too narrow to maintain two lanes of traffic during construction. Closing the bridge and detouring all traffic would reduce the construction time, but the narrow width and character of the local roadways available for a detour made this alternative unacceptable. The preferred method for maintaining traffic during construction will be to have one lane of alternating traffic move through the work zone, controlled by temporary traffic signals at both ends of the bridge.

At this time no definitive construction schedule has been set, but we anticipate the project duration will last one construction season (spring-fall). SHA will make every effort to complete this project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists.
