Project Name:
I-70, Eisenhower Memorial Highway

Location of Project:
TC11 - DUAL BRIDGES 21106 OVER CONOCOCHEAGUE CREEK

Description:
Widen and rehabilitate Bridge 21106 over Concocheague Creek.

Scope:
This approximately $16.5 million, two-year-long project includes rehabilitation and widening of the I-70 bridge over Conococheague Creek, west of Hagerstown, as part of SHA’s bridge preservation and replacement program. The dual bridge, constructed in 1965, is safe for the traveling public, but showing signs of deterioration. This rehabilitation will extend its life by an additional 30 to 50 years.

As part of the project, crews will replace the structural steel and the deck (driving surface) of the bridge, and will widen the piers that support it. When complete, each side of the bridge will be 51 feet wide, up from the original 30 feet, four inches. The highway will continue to have two lanes in each direction, but wide inner shoulders will allow room for the potential future addition of a third lane.

All lanes will remain open during construction, with the exception of occasional temporary single-lane closures when necessary. For the first few months, work will occur below the bridge and will not affect traffic. In late summer 2012, the highway shoulder will close and lane shifting and narrowing may occur. Eventually, traffic will be shifted onto new bridge sections to the inside of the exiting bridges while work occurs on the existing portions.

SHA will make every effort to complete this project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists. Construction began in summer 2012, and will be completed in fall 2014, weather permitting.
