Project Name:

Location of Project:
AT ABELL/MOAKLEY (PHASE 1)

Description:
Reconstruct the MD 5 intersection at Abell Street/Moakley Street. This project will accommodate buggies, bicycles, and pedestrians as appropriate, and includes adding a left turn lane at entrance to St. Mary's Hospital.

Scope:
Constructing northbound and southbound MD 5 left-turn lanes at Abell Street/Moakley Street and associated MD 5 widening. Geometric improvements to the intersection and mainline MD 5 to improve vehicular safety, pedestrian/bicyclist safety and traffic operations.

What Is Under Study:
This breakout project was recommended by MDOT’s MD 5 Leonardtown Planning Study that examined MD 5 (Point Lookout Road) improvements between MD 243 (Newtowne Neck Road)/Maypole Road and MD 245 (Hollywood Road).

After the 1/19/2016 public meeting SHA evaluated adjustments to the proposed improvements to better fit the project purpose and need.

The Phase 1 project will now include a two way center turn lane between Clarks Rest and the entrance of St Mary's Hospital entrance adjacent to MD 5.

An advanced grading contract to clear space for future utilities is anticipated to start construction in the Spring of 2018. A final review for the advanced grading contract was held on 9/06/17. The advanced grading contract is scheduled to start construction in the spring of 2018.
