Project Name:
MD 5, Point Lookout Road

Location of Project:
BRIDGE 1800700 OVER HILTON RUN

Description:
Study to replace bridge deck on Bridge 1800700 over Hilton Run.

Scope:
The bridge on MD 5 (Point Lookout Road) over Hilton Run in Saint Mary’s County is scheduled for rehabilitation. Originally constructed in 1936, the bridge is safe for the travelling public, but the bridge deck surface is nearing the end of its useful service life. Should the deterioration continue, weight restrictions (reduced loads for trucks) would need to be posted to ensure safety. Rehabilitating the bridge at this time will save money on future maintenance spending, and support safety and mobility as a part of SHA’s bridge preservation program.

Multiple alternates for maintaining traffic along MD 5 during construction are being studied. These include maintaining traffic in a single lane with the use of a system of temporary traffic signals to alternate traffic through the work zone at the bridge and detouring all traffic on MD 5 at the bridge.

At this time no definitive construction schedule has been set, but we anticipate the project duration will last one construction season (spring – fall). SHA will make every effort to complete the project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists.
