Project Name:
MD 213, Centerville Road

Location of Project:
BRIDGE 1702000 OVER GRAVEL RUN

Description:
Study to rehabilitate Bridge 1702000 over Gravel Run.

Scope:
The bridge on MD 213 over Gravel Run is scheduled for rehabilitation. Originally constructed in 1932, the bridge is safe for the traveling public, but the bridge deck surface is nearing the end of its useful service life. Should the deterioration continue, weight restrictions (reduced loads for trucks) would need to be posted to ensure safety. This would have a significant impact on the local economy. The rehabilitated bridge will provide wider shoulders in order to improve safety. Replacing the bridge superstructure at this time will save money on future maintenance spending and support safety and mobility as part of SHA’s bridge system preservation program. Several alternates for maintaining traffic along MD 213 were considered. The preferred alternative is to maintain both lanes of traffic using a temporary bridge for most of the construction, but a detour will be needed for two or three weekends. Design is currently underway to replace the deck and make repairs to the abutments as needed.

At this time no definitive construction schedule has been set, but we anticipate the project duration will last one construction season (spring-fall). SHA will make every effort to complete the project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists.
