Project Name:
I-95/I-495, Capital Beltway

Location of Project:
IHB - BRIDGE 1616005 AND 1616006 OVER SUITLAND PARKWAY

Description:
Replace Bridges 1616005 and 1616006 over Suitland Parkway.

Scope:
Originally constructed in 1963, the bridges are showing signs of advancing deterioration in the concrete bridge deck which supports the roadway surface across each bridge. By replacing these structurally deficient structures, future expenditures for the maintenance of the bridges will be reduced, and these actions will support safety and mobility as part of SHA’s bridge system preservation program.

Several alternates for maintaining traffic along I-95 during construction were considered, including a reduction of traffic by one lane in each direction along I-95. Due to the volume of traffic along I-95, and the number of large trucks, it was determined that maintaining four through lanes in each direction was the only viable option to meet the existing traffic demand.

Issues associated with coordinating the maintenance of traffic with the adjacent bridge replacement project on I-495 over Suitland Road need to be resolved before an advertisement date can be set. Once construction starts, SHA will make every effort to complete this project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists. The construction duration is anticipated to be 2 ½ years, weather permitting.

Work will be completed in three stages to allow four travel lanes on each loop of I-95 to be maintained at all times. Motorists will encounter periodic lane shifts throughout the duration of the project.
