Project Name:
I-95, Capital Beltway

Location of Project:
BRIDGE 1615305, 1615306 ON I-495/95 OVER MD 214

Description:
Replace Bridge 1615305, 1615306 over MD 214.

Scope:
This project, located in Prince Georges County, replaces the dual bridges carrying on I-95 (Capital Beltway) over MD 214(Central Avenue). Originally constructed in 1963 and widened in 1971, these bridges are nearing the end of their useful service life. Both bridges are rated structurally deficient. Replacing structurally deficient bridges saves money on future maintenance spending and supports safety and mobility as part of SHA’s bridge system preservation program.

All lanes of traffic on I-95 will be maintained during construction. This will require the proposed bridges to be built wider and in three stages of construction. The wider bridges are compatible with future widening of the Capital Beltway. Building the bridges in stages requires closing ramps during construction. The ramp carrying traffic from eastbound MD 214 onto northbound I-95/495 will be closed and traffic directed to the interchange at MD 202. The ramp carrying traffic from southbound I-95 onto eastbound MD 214 will be directed to exit at the MD 202 interchange. Necessary improvements will be made at these to interchanges to accommodate the additional traffic. The proposed bridges will also be longer to allow for extending the left turn lane from westbound MD 214 to I-95 southbound and to accommodate sidewalks in the future. In addition, the proposed 5’ outside shoulder on eastbound lanes is bicycle compatible.

Utility companies are currently preparing plans for relocation of their facilities near the bridge. Most of these utilities will be relocated prior to start of the bridge replacement construction.

SHA will make every effort to complete this project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin Summer 2018 and be completed by Fall 2020.
