Project Name:
MD 382, Croom Road

Location of Project:
BRIDGE 1606100 OVER CHARLES BRANCH

Description:
Study to Replace Bridge 1606100 over Charles Branch.

Scope:
The bridge on the MD 382 (Croom Road) crossing at Charles Branch in Prince Georges County is scheduled for replacement. Originally constructed in 1933, the bridge is safe for the traveling public, but is nearing the end of its useful service life. Should the deterioration continue, weight restrictions (reduced loads for trucks) would need to be posted to ensure safety. This could have a significant impact on the local economy and movement of traffic since MD 382 functions as a primary travel route for traffic traveling east of US 301 to the rural areas of Prince Georges County. The new bridge will be widened slightly to provide for wider shoulders to improve safety. Replacing the bridge will save money on future maintenance spending, and support safety and mobility as a part of MDOT SHA’s bridge preservation program.

Several alternatives for maintaining traffic along MD 382 during construction were considered including maintaining traffic in a single lane with the use of a system of temporary traffic signals to alternate traffic through the work zone at the bridge while completing the bridge in two stages, and a complete detour of MD 382 traffic while completing the work in a single stage. At this time the preferred alternative will be to detour traffic during construction since it will minimize the duration of construction and its impact upon the traveling public. See the map included on this site under the maps folder.

MDOT SHA will make every effort to complete the project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists. At this time no definitive construction schedule has been set, but we anticipate the project detour will be in place for 10 weeks during some future summer school recess period.
