Project Area Map

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) in partnership with Montgomery County is conducting a corridor study to identify transportation needs and evaluate potential build alternatives to accommodate high frequency, reliable Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service on US 29, between Burtonsville Park and Ride and the Silver Spring Transit center, approximately 12 miles. The purpose of the study is to evaluate build alternatives for BRT that can operate within the existing right-of-way and begin service as quickly as possible. For additional background information, click on the draft December 2015: Draft Purpose and Need Document.

What Is Under Study:
Montgomery County Corridor Advisory Committees (CAC's) meet every 8 to 12 weeks to facilitate the planning process. Topics covered to date include:
  • Identification of transportation needs;
  • Development of the purpose and needs, goals and objectives;
  • Project process and schedule; and
  • Proposed alternatives
Two alternatives have been developed for testing. Analysis will be completed in Fall 2016. A draft technical report on findings will be released prior to a public meeting that will be held Fall 2016.

Next Steps
MDOT is funding the initial corridor study through selection of an alternative. Completion of the study is expected in Fall/Winter 2016. Prior to completion of preliminary engineering, the project will undergo detailed environmental analysis as required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Montgomery County will fund the environmental analysis and related preliminary engineering.
