Project Name:
MD 22, Aberdeen Thruway

Location of Project:
SRI - AT BEARDS HILL

Description:
Intersection improvements at Beards Hill Road. (BRAC Intersection Improvements)

Scope:
SHA is reconstructing the intersection of MD 22 (Aberdeen Thruway) at Beards Hill Road to improve intersection safety and capacity to handle increased traffic in Aberdeen generated by the federal BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) program at the Aberdeen Proving Ground.

The project, which began late summer 2014, includes:

(a) Adding a third through lane to MD 22 in both the eastbound and westbound directions by widening to the outside.

(b) Adding lengthened right turn lanes on MD 22 eastbound and westbound at Beards Hill Road.

(c) Adding a double left turn lane to MD 22 eastbound at Beards Hill Road.

(d) Adding lengthened left turn lanes on MD 22 eastbound and westbound at Beards Hill Road and Middelton Road.

(e) Adding double left turn lanes to Beards Hill Road northbound and southbound at MD 22.

(f) Construction of new curb/gutter and sidewalk within the project limits on MD 22 eastbound, Beards Hill Road, and MD 22 westbound east of Middelton Road.

(g) The existing traffic signals will be replaced at the Beards Hill Road and Middelton Road intersections.

(h) Within the project limits, MD 22 and Beards Hill Road will be resurfaced.

(i) Adding retaining walls along MD 22 eastbound west of Beards Hill Road and along MD 22 westbound east of Middelton Road.

Weather and other construction factors permitting, the pre-construction traffic pattern at the intersection will be restored fall 2017, with the new through lanes on MD 22 open to traffic spring 2018.
