County:Harford Project Number:HA348_53
Project Name:
MD 22, Aberdeen Thruway

Location of Project:
SRI - AT MD 462

Intersection improvements at MD 462 (Paradise Road). (BRAC Intersection Improvements)
SHA is reconstructing and widening the intersection of MD 22 (Aberdeen Thruway) at MD 462 (Paradise Road) to improve intersection safety and capacity.

The $8.2 million project will handle increased traffic in Aberdeen generated by the federal BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) program at Aberdeen Proving Ground.

The intersection improvement project includes:

- Adding a third through lane to MD 22 in both the eastbound and westbound directions by widening to the outside.

- Adding a lengthened right turn lane on MD 22 westbound.

- Adding a double left turn lane and a single right turn lane to MD 462 southbound. Adding a single right turn lane to MD 462 northbound.

- New curb/gutter and sidewalk within the project limits on MD 462 and portions of MD 22.

- Replacement of the existing traffic signal at the intersection.

- Pavement resurfacing on MD 22 and MD 462 in the intersection area.

In late fall 2017, crews restored the pre-construction traffic pattern on MD 22. The current phase of work includes re-construction of the concrete medians on MD 22 on the approaches to the intersection.

Crews will resume asphalt pavement work as weather and temperatures permits early spring 2018.

There may be temporary single lane closures along MD 22 eastbound and westbound and on MD 462 in the vicinity of MD 22 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and overnight hours Sunday through Thursday with lane closures and detours in effect between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next day.

There may be flag-persons controlling the flow of vehicles at the intersection and the movement of construction equipment. Please plan ahead for extra travel time and look ahead for changing traffic patterns, concrete barriers and construction personnel and equipment within the work zone.

Weather and other construction factors permitting, the project will be complete early summer 2018.
