Project Name:
MD 28, Clay Street

Location of Project:
BRIDGE 1002900 OVER MONOCACY RIVER

Description:
Rehabilitate Bridge 10029 over Monocacy River.

Scope:
This project will complete a major rehabilitation to the bridge on MD 28 over the Monocacy River, which was originally constructed in 1931. The main scope of this project is to replace the concrete deck. Additional work includes completing minor structural repairs to other steel and concrete elements, providing safer concrete barriers on the sides of the bridge roadway, and cleaning and painting of the steel truss. Replacing the bridge deck along with these other repairs will save money on future maintenance and support safety and mobility as part of SHA’s bridge system preservation program.

During construction, both directions of traffic will be maintained utilizing one alternating lane controlled by traffic signals. Several alternates for maintaining traffic along MD 28 during construction were considered. The preferred alternative is typically a complete detour as it would reduce the time required for construction and address safety issues associated with having both motorists and construction workers on a narrower bridge. In this case, the detour route was too long and would result in unreasonable increases in travel time.

Construction is expected to begin Spring 2018 and be completed in early 2019. SHA will make every effort to complete this project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists.

This project is funded for construction under Governor Larry Hogan’s Investment in Highways and Bridges program aimed at addressing Maryland’s structurally deficient bridges.
