Project Name:
MD 273, Rising Sun Road

Location of Project:
BRIDGE 0704400 OVER BIG ELK CREEK

Description:
Study to replace Bridge 0704400 over Big Elk Creek.

Scope:
The MD 273 Bridge crossing over Big Elk Creek, constructed in 1964, is structurally safe but is showing signs of significant deterioration that need to be addressed. The existing structure is a three span, 166 feet long, steel beam bridge. The proposed bridge will be a single span precast concrete beam bridge. The bridge will accommodate the existing travel lanes and be wider than the existing to provide shoulders to improve safety

The proposed method for maintaining traffic on MD 273 during construction provides two-way traffic in one reversible lane controlled by a system of traffic signals. This method of maintaining traffic has been used successfully on many other SHA projects. Be advised that wide loads may not fit through the work zone when this traffic scheme is in use.

At this time no definitive construction schedule has been set, but we anticipate the project duration will last one construction season (spring-fall). MDOT SHA will make every effort to complete this project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists.
