Project Name:
US 1, Washington Boulevard

Location of Project:
BRIDGE 3008 ON US 1 OVER CSX

Description:
Replace Bridge 03008 over CSX.

Scope:
The bridge on US 1 (Washington Blvd.) crossing the CSX tracks near Elkridge, Maryland in Baltimore County, is scheduled for replacement. Originally constructed in 1930, the bridge is safe for the traveling public, but is nearing the end of its useful service life. Should the deterioration continue, weight restrictions (reduced loads for trucks) would need to be posted to ensure safety. This would have a significant impact on the local economy given the number of commercial businesses and trucking companies located in the area. The new bridge will be wider to provide for widened lanes and shoulders to improve safety. Replacing the bridge will save money on future maintenance spending and support safety and mobility as a part of SHA’s bridge preservation program.
Several alternatives for maintaining traffic along US 1 during construction were considered including maintaining a minimum of two lanes of traffic, and a complete detour of US 1. It was determined that a total closure of US 1 for an extended period of time would have a significant impact upon the local residents and business community. Therefore the preferred method for maintaining traffic will be to maintain a minimum of one lane of traffic in each direction while replacing the bridge in two stage of construction.
SHA will make every effort to complete the project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists. Construction is scheduled to begin Spring, 2018 and be completed Summer, 2020, weather permitting.
This project is funded for construction under Governor Larry Hogan’s Investment in Highways and Bridges program aimed at addressing Maryland’s structurally deficient bridges.
