Project Name:
CO 3482, Putty Hill Avenue

Location of Project:
PUTTY HILL ROAD OVER I-695 - (BRIDGE 0317400)

Description:
Study to rehabilitate Bridge 0317400 over I-695.

Scope:
The bridge on Putty Hill Avenue crossing I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) in Baltimore County is scheduled for replacement. Originally constructed in 1961, the bridge is safe for the traveling public, but is nearing the end of its useful service life. Should the deterioration continue, weight restrictions (reduced loads for trucks) would need to be posted to ensure safety. Replacing the bridge at this time will save money on future maintenance spending, and support safety and mobility as a part of SHA’s bridge preservation program.

The preferred method for maintaining traffic during construction will be to maintain two-way traffic in a single lane with the use of a system of temporary traffic signals to alternate traffic through the work zone at the bridge. Work will be completed in two stages. A complete detour of traffic on Putty Hill Avenue was also considered. Closing the bridge and detouring all traffic would reduce the construction time, but the increased travel time for the detour made this alternative unacceptable.

At this time no definitive construction schedule has been set, but we anticipate the project duration will last two construction seasons. SHA will make every effort to complete the project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists.
