Project Name:
MD 137, Mount Carmel Road

Location of Project:
IHB - BRIDGE 03050 OVER I-83

Description:
Replace Bridge 03050 over I-83. Bicycle and pedestrian improvements will be provided where appropriate.

Scope:
MDOT SHA is nearing completion of its project to replace the MD 137 (Mt. Carmel Road) Bridge over I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway) in the Hereford community of Baltimore County.

The original 62-year-old-bridge was safe, but was rated “structurally deficient”, outlived its service life and required a total replacement project.

MDOT SHA’s bridge replacement project includes widening the bridge deck to create a new third lane, a center turn lane to accommodate left turns from westbound Mt. Carmel Road to southbound I-83, easing daily congestion and improving safety operations. More than 9,500 vehicles use MD 137 at I-83 each day.

Construction work by MDOT SHA's contractor, The Six-M Company began summer 2017. In late summer 2017, MDOT SHA's contractor, The Six-M Company, and Mabey, Inc. installed a temporary bridge, known as a Mabey Bridge for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to use during construction.

MDOT SHA opened the temporary bridge to traffic in October 2017, followed by the demolition of the old bridge in fall 2017.

The new bridge opened to traffic in April 2018 with one lane open in each direction. The temporary bridge was removed spring 2018.

Construction work on the Mt. Carmel Road approaches to the new bridge will continue through summer 2018.

Weather permitting, the new turn lane from MD 137 west to I-83 south will open to traffic in late summer 2018. Digital message boards will alert travelers in advance of the final 3 lane traffic pattern on the bridge: One lane east, one lane west and the turn lane.

The $8.8 million project will be complete late summer 2018, weather and other construction factors permitting.

Note to Commuters: The MDOT SHA Park & Ride lot on Mt. Carmel Road west of the I-83 interchange will remain open during construction. P&R Lot users should use caution while entering and leaving the lot, as it is within the bridge work zone.
