MD 0128 BUTLER ROAD BRIDGE 0306900 OVER MCGILL RUN
MD 0128 BUTLER ROAD BRIDGE 0306900 OVER MCGILL RUN Picture
Project Name:
MD 128, Butler Road

Location of Project:
BRIDGE 0306900 OVER MCGILL RUN

Description:
Study to replace Bridge 03069 over McGil Run.

Scope:
The MD 128 (Butler Road) Bridge crossing over McGill, constructed in 1932, is structurally safe but is showing signs of significant deterioration and needs to be replaced. Replacing the bridge will support safety and mobility as part of SHA’s system preservation program.

The existing structure is a two span 27 foot long concrete slab bridge. The proposed bridge will be a single span pre-stressed concrete slab bridge. The bridge will accommodate the two existing travel lanes and provide shoulders to meet current safety requirements. The bridge will be built on the same roadway alignment as the existing bridge.

The proposed method for maintaining traffic on MD 128 during construction provides two-way traffic in one reversible lane controlled by a system of traffic signals. The work will be completed in two phases as a half of the new bridge is constructed in each phase. This method of maintaining traffic has been used successfully on many other SHA projects. Be advised that wide loads may not fit through the work zone when this traffic scheme is in use.

Several options to replace the bridge while minimizing impacts to the public were considered. Maintaining both lanes of traffic during construction was not an option because the bridge is too narrow to maintain both lanes and replace the bridge. Shifting the roadway alignment and constructing the new bridge parallel to the existing bridge would increase costs and impact adjacent properties and sensitive environmental areas. Consideration was also given to closing the roadway and detouring all traffic to adjacent roadways, but a traffic study showed the roadways and intersections along the proposed detour route could not support the additional traffic.
SHA will make every effort to complete this project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists.

In addition, the bridge on MD 128 over Piney Run is being considered for rehabilitation as part of this project. This bridge located approximately 1/2 mile from McGill Run was built in 1944 and is showing signs of deterioration requiring rehabilitation. The overall project is in the early stages of design and a construction schedule has not been established.
