Project Name:
I-83, Harrisburg Expressway

Location of Project:
BRIDGE 03062 OVER PADONIA ROAD

Description:
Replace Bridge 03062 over Padonia Road.

Scope:
This project will replace the bridges carrying I-83 over Padonia Road. Originally constructed in 1950, these bridges are nearing the end of their useful service life. The northbound bridge is rated structurally deficient due to the condition of the concrete deck that carries traffic. Replacing structurally deficient bridges saves money on future maintenance spending and supports safety and mobility as part of SHA’s bridge system preservation program. This project is funded for construction under Governor Larry Hogan’s Investment in Highways and Bridges program aimed at addressing Maryland’s structurally deficient bridges. The scope of project includes the addition of a left turn lane for motorists traveling on eastbound Padonia Road wishing to access the ramp for I-83 North. In addition, I-83 southbound Ramp B at Padonia Road will be widened to reduce the length of the traffic queue. This identified traffic improvement can now be accommodated with new longer bridge.

The bridges will be replaced in stages with all lanes of traffic on I-83 maintained at all times. The proposed construction will likely require lane closures on Padonia Road to allow for construction of new bridge and provide a safe work zone for the workers. As part of the Maintenance of Traffic, the ramp from eastbound Padonia Road to I-83 North will be closed during construction. This closure will require that the ramp traffic be detoured onto Deereco Road south to the I-83 North ramp at the Timonium Road/I-83 interchange for about 2 years until the widening of Padonia Road is completed.

SHA will make every effort to complete this project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists. Construction is tentatively scheduled to start in the spring of 2018.
