Project Name:
I-95/I-495, Capital Beltway

Location of Project:
CAPITAL BELTWAY STUDY, AMERICAN LEGION BRIDGE TO W. WILSON BRIDGE

Description:
Study to widen I-495 and determine the feasibility of managed lanes from the American Legion Bridge to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge (42.2 miles).

Scope:
Project Study Area

The Full Beltway Study limits include Maryland's entire portion of the Capital Beltway (42 miles), which extends from the American Legion Bridge to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. The study area is within Montgomery and Prince George's counties. The purpose of the project is to: improve regional mobility; provide increased safety; maximize travel operational efficiencies; provide cost-effective transportation infrastructure; address current and forecasted travel demand; and, support the area's economic growth and the environment.

The Capital Beltway provides an essential highway link on the East Coast serving local, regional and interstate trips. It is also the only circumferential route in the DC area, connecting many radial routes. 2006 traffic exceeded 200,000 vehicles/day in some sections; projected to increase to nearly 300,000 vehicles/day by 2030.

What Is Under Study:

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland State Highway Administration (MDOT/SHA) completed Joint Mobility Studies in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), after the 2004 Open House, to evaluate options to relieve congestion along the Capital Beltway (I-495/I-95). You may view those reports on the the Documents tab.
