Project Name:
MD 468, Shadyside Road

Location of Project:
STRUCT 02016X0 OVER LERCH CREEK, MD255-STRUCT 02025X0 OVER LERCH CREEK

Description:
Study to Rehabilitate structure 02016X0 over Lerch Creek.

Scope:
The structure on MD 468 (Muddy Creek Road) over Lerch Creek is scheduled for replacement. The structure is safe for the travelling public, but is nearing the end of its useful life and is in need of replacement.

Several options to replace the structure while minimizing impacts to the public have been considered. Maintaining both lanes of traffic during construction was not an option because MD 468 is too narrow to maintain both lanes and perform the replacement work. Widening the road to create additional space would increase costs and impacts to sensitive environmental areas. Consideration was also given to closing the road and detouring all traffic to adjacent highways. While this had the advantage of allowing the project to be completed in the shortest amount of time, it was not ideal due to the length of the detour. The proposed method for maintaining traffic on MD 468 during construction provides two-way traffic in one reversible lane controlled by a system of traffic signals. This method of maintaining traffic has been used successfully on many other SHA projects.

SHA will make every effort to complete this project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists. Construction is currently unfunded but the work should be completed in one construction season (Spring thru Fall).
